Asking for Japanese Words and English Equivalents

Close to You = これ

Closer to your Conversation Partner = それ

Remote from both You and Partner = あれ

これは　にほんごで　なん　と　いいますか。

それは　にほんごで　なん　と　いいますか。

あれは　にほんごで　なん　と　いいますか。

 

= Lit. "How do you say/What do you call This/That in Japanese?

What is This/That/That over there Called in Japanese?

 

in Japanese? = にほんご　で

What is it Called = なん　と いいますか。

Breaking it down further...

なん= means "what" 何

と　= is the "quotative" particle

いいます= verb that means to "say" or "call" 言

 

So, if you want to know the Japanese Word for an English one you say:

「X」は　にほんご で　なん　と　いいますか。

= How do you say "X" in Japanese? e.g.

「Love」は　にほんご で　なん と　いいますか。

OR, A shorter or "contracted version" of なん と　

いいますか = って

or Xって　なん　ですか。

「あい」ってなんですか。「あい」って　「Love」　です。

These last two phrases are great ways to ask about things. For example, when we talk about MAJORS we can say either

「Biology」 は　にほんごで　なん　と　いいますか。Or

「せいぶつがく」って　なん　ですか。

「せいぶつがく」って Biology です。

This って = -tte and it is a contraction of と いいます

 

Some Majors:
